Liwa Date Festival Becomes a Popular Tourist Destination
The activities of the 2010 Liwa Date Festival picked up remarkably with an increasing flow of visitors marking the weekend holiday which represents a chance for the working classes to enjoy the cultural celebrations at the event. The number of foreign tourists continued to increase as well on account of the growing popularity of the folkloric performances tent, the traditional houses equipped with all the authentic accessories, and the traditional market or "Souq"; all reflecting the genuine Emirati culture and heritage.
Meanwhile, the judging committee started the inspection and audit process for the "Alfard" dates category producing farms, to verify its compliance with the competition’s terms and requirements in terms of hygiene, appropriate palm trees nurturing and the utilization of the optimum watering method.
About 250 participants are competing for this category, ranking it the third most popular after the "Alkhalas" with 670 contestants and "Aldabas" with 360 contestants, compared to the "Bumaan" category which received no more than 102 participations only. The committee also started to receive the participations in the "Alnokhba" category, which requires a minimum of 10 different kinds and a maximum of 15, with a weight range of 2 to 3 kilograms per participation.
In general, all contestants revealed their satisfaction with the fairness of the results, while admitting the toughness of competitions this year adding more flavor to the festival.
"The degree of awareness for the conditions to participate and the standards required has increased remarkably this year, and this is apparent from the high quality of the products for all the categories of the competition, and that explains the heated competition with see this year," commented Mohamed Ghanem Al Mansouri, member of the date screening committee.
