Clean Up Arabia to Raise Awareness on Marine Environment Protection
Under the patronage of HH Sheikh Hazza Bin Hamdan Al Nahyan, the 14th Clean Up Arabia campaign will be organised on November 20 and November 21, 2009 at various locations in Abu Dhabi.
Jointly organised by Environment Agency - Abu Dhabi (EAD) and Emirates Diving Association, and supported by GASCO Diving Club, ADMA-OPCO and Noukhada Adventure Company, the voluntary event is aimed at raising public awareness about the negative impacts of marine debris on human health and marine environment.
The campaign, which includes a number of clean up and public awareness activities, seeks to collect trash and debris from beaches and key dive sites.
The clean-up of Eastern Mangrove will take place November 20, and Al Mirfa Fisherman’s port and public beach on November 21 with the participation of hundreds of volunteers including students and divers from all over the region.
Various awareness programmes will also be organised from November 15 to 21 including marine seminars, documentary screening and a children awareness day.
Marine talk series include a lecture titled "Dugongs and Sea Turtles: The Pride of U.A.E’s Marine Wildlife", by Dr Himansu Das, Associate Scientist in Endangered Species at the Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi, on Sunday November 15 at 7 PM at ADMA Auditorium.
Ms. Suaad Al Harthi, Assistant Scientist at the Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi will deliver a speech on the ecosystems and habitats of Marawah Marine Biosphere Reserve and Dr. Mark Beech, Cultural Landscapes Manager at the Abu Dhabi Authority for Culture and Heritage will shed the light on the marine archaeology of the UAE.
A documentary about tracking the endangered Dugong in Abu Dhabi titled “Tracking Mermaids” will be screened at Cinestar Cinema in Marina Mall on Monday, November 16 at 7.30 PM.
Kid’s Marine Day, an awareness day about marine environment for kids aged 6 years and older is planned on Thursday, November 19 between 6 PM and 8 PM at Ras Al Akhdar Beach, Abu Dhabi.
The participation in all campaign activities except for the clean-up dives is open to all. A renewed EDA membership is obligatory for the participation in the clean-up dives and the deadline for registration is on Wednesday November 18, 2009.
