How I Searched for a Used Car in Abu Dhabi and Found It Cheaper Than Expected

How I Searched for a Used Car in Abu Dhabi and Found It Cheaper Than Expected

"A used car in Abu Dhabi can cost 15–20% less than in Dubai — if you know where to look. I spent three weeks visiting showrooms and private markets, comparing prices on several models, and I ended up finding a deal cheaper than I expected. Here's what I learned."
Khalid Al-Mansouri — a regular car enthusiast

Why Abu Dhabi Is Cheaper Than Dubai
When I started looking, I assumed prices were roughly the same everywhere. I was wrong.
Dubai has higher demand in the used car market: more expats, more resellers, higher rent for showrooms. Abu Dhabi is calmer — fewer middlemen, more private sellers. The price difference for the same model can reach 15–20%.
For example, a 2021 Toyota Camry in Dubai was offered to me from AED 65,000. In Abu Dhabi, I found the same year with similar mileage for AED 55,000. That's a AED 10,000 difference. Not a small amount.

Where I Looked: Showrooms, Markets, and Online
I started with showrooms. The advantages are obvious: warranty, inspection, paperwork. The downsides — more expensive and almost no room for negotiation.
Then I went to private markets. Cheaper, but higher risks: rolled-back odometers, AC problems that show up immediately at +45°C.
And that's where I met a seller named Ahmed. He worked at a small showroom on the outskirts of Abu Dhabi. We got talking.
"Listen," he said, "you're not the first one coming from Dubai to buy a car here. Our prices are lower because the market is smaller. But I'll tell you honestly: if you want it cheaper — go to a private seller. Just check everything yourself. VIN, AC, history. We offer a warranty here, but we're not a charity."
"And if I find a better deal from a private seller?" I asked.
"You will. Just don't come crying when the AC dies. Or when the mileage turns out to be rolled back. I'll tell you this: cheap doesn't mean good. But expensive doesn't mean reliable either. Look at the car itself."
I remembered that conversation. Ahmed was right: Abu Dhabi is cheaper, but you have to check everything.

My Purchase: How I Found a Better Deal Than Expected
I was looking for a 2021–2022 car with a budget of up to AED 60,000. In Abu Dhabi showrooms, prices started at AED 65,000. On private listings, I found one for AED 55,000 — but with problems: the mileage was rolled back, and the AC was working poorly.
In the end, I bought a car for AED 57,000 — 15% cheaper than the average showroom price. What helped: I compared prices across platforms, checked the VIN, and negotiated.
And that's when I remembered a quote I'd read from a car expert:
"A used car isn't about saving money. It's about how much you're willing to pay for peace of mind. A cheap car without history is a lottery. An expensive car with history is insurance. Choose what matters more to you."
I chose insurance. And I have no regrets.

What I Would Do Differently
Three things I'd do differently:
Check the VIN before the test drive. I spent two weeks on a car that turned out to have been in an accident. If I'd checked earlier, I would have saved time.
Test the AC in the heat. In Abu Dhabi, this is critical. I took the car for a spin in the morning at +35°C, and the AC worked fine. But in the afternoon at +48°C, it couldn't keep up. The repair could have cost up to AED 5,000.
Negotiate harder. I felt awkward offering my own price and would have overpaid by AED 5,000 if I hadn't negotiated. In the UAE private seller market, haggling is the norm.

Verdict: Is It Worth Looking in Abu Dhabi?
Yes, it is. A used car in Abu Dhabi is genuinely cheaper than in Dubai. But you need to compare, check, and negotiate.
If you're buying a used car in Abu Dhabi, start with online platforms — they make it easier to filter by price and year, and they aggregate listings from dealers and private sellers. I, for example, looked at offers on auto.ae — you can filter cars by year, mileage, and price, compare offers from different sellers, and immediately see where it's cheaper. It saves time and helps you avoid overpaying.
