EWEC And Andaz Capital Gate Abu Dhabi Form Strategic Partnership To Power Iconic Hotel With Clean Energy

EWEC (Emirates Water and Electricity Company), a leading company in the integrated planning, purchasing, supply, and system despatch services for water and electricity across the UAE, has entered into a strategic partnership with Andaz Capital Gate Abu Dhabi, the five-star boutique lifestyle hotel by Hyatt, to power the hotel with clean energy, verified through Clean Energy Certificates (CECs). The partnership marks a significant step toward decarbonisation in Abu Dhabi’s hospitality sector.

Under the agreement, EWEC will supply CECs to fully cover the hotel's electricity consumption, providing verified, credible proof that every unit of power consumed by Andaz Capital Gate Abu Dhabi is sourced from clean sources. Issued by the Abu Dhabi Department of Energy (DoE), CECs are the only accredited mechanism in Abu Dhabi that allows entities to validate their clean energy consumption. By adopting this internationally recognised instrument, the hotel is taking measurable action to eliminate its Scope 2 emissions and integrate verifiable sustainability into its daily operations.

Mohamed Almarzooqi, Chief Assets Officer of EWEC, said: “Transforming the hospitality sector is a strategic imperative for achieving the UAE’s long-term sustainability objectives. By adopting Clean Energy Certificates, Andaz Capital Gate Abu Dhabi is moving beyond ambition and taking verifiable climate action, securing a powerful competitive advantage in an industry increasingly defined by environmental accountability. This partnership demonstrates how EWEC enables organisations across the Emirate to strategically decarbonise their operations, eliminate Scope 2 emissions, and actively drive the nation's transition to a net-zero future.”

Dominik Strobel, General Manager at Andaz Capital Gate Abu Dhabi, said: “At Andaz Capital Gate Abu Dhabi, we believe meaningful hospitality extends beyond exceptional guest experiences, it is about creating a positive impact on our community, our destination, and the environment. Guided by Hyatt's World of Care commitments and our focus on responsible environmental stewardship, our partnership with EWEC reflects our dedication to operating more sustainably. By powering the hotel with verified clean energy, we are significantly reducing our carbon footprint while supporting the UAE's climate ambitions. Through this initiative, we are proud to offer guests a more conscious way to experience Abu Dhabi, where thoughtful hospitality and sustainability go hand in hand.”

Decarbonising energy-intensive industries, including hospitality, is essential to achieving the DoE's Clean Energy Strategic Target 2035 for Electricity Production in Abu Dhabi and the UAE Net Zero by 2050 Strategic Initiative. With the global hotel industry accounting for approximately one per cent of worldwide carbon emissions and facing industry-wide mandates to reduce emissions by 66 per cent per room by 2030, to align with international climate goals, the transition to verified renewable power is a strategic necessity.

Conforming to the International REC Standard (I-REC), the CEC scheme provides organisations with a transparent, globally recognised mechanism to track, verify, and communicate their clean energy use with absolute confidence, satisfying the stringent Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) criteria of modern consumers and investors.

Through this agreement, Andaz Capital Gate Abu Dhabi joins a growing cross-sector coalition of sustainability leaders utilising CECs. Organisations in key sectors such as healthcare, heavy industry, retail, energy, hospitality, real estate, digital infrastructure, and events are actively advancing the UAE’s decarbonisation roadmap by acquiring CECs.

Organisations ready to demonstrate verifiable environmental leadership are strongly encouraged to participate in EWEC’s upcoming Clean Energy Certificates auctions.
