Abu Dhabi Cultural Foundation

The Cultural Foundation comprises the National Archives, the National Library and the Institute of Culture and Art. All of these are housed in a modern, Islamic style building with wonderful tilework and an intricately decorated passageway. The foundation hosts excellent exhibitions of contemporary art, an annual Emirati film festival and regular screening of art house cinema, theatre performances and classical musical concerts, along with interesting exhibits on local heritage, crafts and Islamic calligraphy.Hours: Sat-Wed 7:30am-2:30pm Thu 9:00am-12:00pm Fri 5:00pm-8:00pm Location:Sheikh Zayed the Second St Tel: 02 621 5300 The Abu Dhabi Authority for Culture and Heritage (ADACH) is the government institution in charge of looking after, conserving and promoting the heritage and culture of the Emirate of Abu Dhabi. The Authority was established through Emiri decree on the 14th of October 2005; it incorporates the Cultural Foundation as well as the Department of Antiquities and Tourism in Al Ain.ADACH’s Chairman is H.E. Sheikh Sultan bin Tahnoun Al Nahyan, also Chairman of the Abu Dhabi Tourism Authority. He is supported by a board of directors including Zaki Anwar Zaki Nusaibah, as Deputy Chairman, Saeed Butti Al Qubaisi, Saeed Ghanim Hamoudah, Frauke Heard-Bey, Mubarak Hamad Al Muhairi, Nujoom Nasser Hussein Al Ghanim and Huda Ibrahim Kanoo. ADACH is headed by H.E. Director General Mohamed Khalaf Al-Mazrouei. The creation of the Authority was the direct result of the implementation of the Abu Dhabi Cultural Heritage Management Strategy. The Strategy was prepared under the hospices of the Abu Dhabi Tourism Authority by a team of experts working under the technical supervision of the international organization UNESCO. The Heritage Management Strategy, which developed from 2003 to 2005, was born from the rising concern for the preservation of Abu Dhabi’s cultural heritage. It identified the main critical issues affecting the sustainability and development of Abu Dhabi’s culture and heritage and addressed the fields of education and media, the promotion of literature and the arts, the encouragement of artistic creativity, the conservation of cultural assets, the development of museums, the promotion of archaeological research, historic urban planning and cultural landscapes management, the conservation of intangible heritage, as well as cultural tourism development. With the establishment of the new Abu Dhabi Authority for Culture and Heritage, the Department of Antiquities and Tourism in Al Ain and the Cultural Foundation in Abu Dhabi became part of the new Authority with the aim to achieve an integrated approach to the promotion and enhancement of culture and heritage. The mandate and objectives of the new Authority had to reflect this approach; they include the following: Promoting Abu Dhabi’s culture and heritage; Encouraging productivity and creativity in culture and the arts; Formulating and implementing cultural heritage policies, plans and projects; Studying projects related to developing, protecting and promoting Abu Dhabi’s cultural heritage as well as submitting the necessary suggestions to the authorities concerned; Organizing exhibitions, conferences, workshops and events related to cultural heritage as well as sponsoring intellectual and art activities; Managing lectures, conferences and cultural events as well as organizing symposiums, seminars and intellectual, scientific and art gatherings; Promoting and disseminating studies and research projects in the Authority’s field of competence; Preserving archaeological, historic and heritage sites and buildings; Identifying and producing an inventory of movable and immovable cultural property; Carrying out archaeological excavations as well as issuing the necessary licences and approving requests for excavation concessions; Overseeing the activities of scientific missions undertaking excavations i
