On International Day of Democracy, observed globally under the theme “Space for Civil Society”, the UAE’s Federal National Council (FNC) expressed its pride in the approach followed by the country’s leadership to enhance parliamentary life as part of the political empowerment programme of His Highness Sheikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the UAE and Ruler of Abu Dhabi.
In a statement, the FNC said the President’s programme is aimed at promoting and consolidating the democratic approach in the UAE Federation, established more than four decades ago.
FNC’s participation in the International Day of Democracy celebrations reflects the leading role it plays through exercising its constitutional powers, parliamentary diplomacy as well as participation and involvement in relevant regional and international parliamentary events and circles, the FNC’s statement added.
The UN General Assembly, in resolution A/62/7 (2007), encouraged Governments to strengthen the national programme devoted to the promotion and consolidation of democracy, and also decided that 15 September of each year should be observed as the International Day of Democracy.
The FNC also emphasised that it continues to interact and coordinate with public benefit bodies and social institutions in order to serve the nation and nationals and keep pace with the overall development taking place in all spheres in the UAE under the leadership of Sheikh Khalifa, His Highness Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, His Highness Sheikh Mohamed Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces, and Their Highnesses, the Supreme Council Member and Rulers of the Emirates.
