Record Number Of Abu Dhabi Do-Gooders Reached
(13 August 2015)

Residents have put forward a record number of people in the community to be recognised for their good works.

Organisers of this year’s Abu Dhabi Awards say they have had the highest number of nominations in the event’s 10 years – 36,404.

“It has been 10 years since the Abu Dhabi Awards were launched,” said Hend Al Otaiba, Director of Strategic Communications at Abu Dhabi Media, one of the event’s partners.

“In that time it has become a beacon of positivity across the emirate, fostering a sense of community spirit and highlighting the often unrecognised good work being carried out by ordinary citizens.”

The awards committee said the younger generation was becoming more and more involved.

Organisers believe a rise in online nominations has helped to boost public participation and engage the youth.

“It is particularly encouraging to see more of the country’s youth getting involved with the awards, nominating people they consider to have made a positive difference in their schools, universities and communities to receive this prestigious honour,” a committee representative said.

This year’s nominations have come from a broader demographic than previous awards, with 135 nationalities taking part in the nomination process, up from 117 in 2013.

Fares Hamad Fares, vice president of corporate communications at Etisalat, another partner, said: “As always, being part of the Abu Dhabi Awards journey is hugely rewarding for us. It truly helps to drive goodness and positive acts across Abu Dhabi.”

Since its inauguration in 2005 there have been 63 recipients of the awards. Last year’s seven winners were recognised for a wide range of achievements, including philanthropy, health and preserving the culture and history of Abu Dhabi. They included Iraqi historian and author Dr Falih Handhal, who has lived in the UAE for 40 years.

Dr Handhal has been involved in more than 35 books about the history and culture of the UAE and the region, including A Dictionary for the Arabic Dialect and Spoken Words of the UAE, which preserves the linguistic riches of Bedouin oral culture.

The assessment of the nominations is now under way and will continue through the coming months.
