How To Disinfect Your Home Daily
During these uncertain times, one thing we can control is the cleanliness of our homes and providing a safe, disinfected space for our families. Proper sanitization of surfaces and spaces reduces your chances of contracting the coronavirus and developing COVID-19. Keep your family safe by following these easy steps for the sanitization and disinfection in your home.
Reading Disinfectant Labels is Important
You are probably no stranger to cleaning sprays, wipes and solutions. But if you’re like many people, you’ve probably grabbed one of those bottles of cleaning solution and sprayed it onto a surface and wiped it clean a few seconds after. “That’s enough to clean my counters,” you thought.
Wrong! In fact, if you read most labels affixed to the back of cleaning sprays and wipes, you’ll be surprised to find that, in many cases, the instructions call for you to leave the solution on the surface for up to 10 minutes in order to properly disinfect the area. Other solutions require that you don’t wipe it off at all.
Every brand is different, and each one of its products functions differently as well. If you’re just trying to clean the area, it’s okay to wipe it off immediately. But if you’re looking to thoroughly disinfect it, here’s what you need to do:
- Disinfectant Cleaning Sprays - spray the cleaning solution 6-8 inches from surface until thoroughly wet. You can wipe it off after 10 minutes or allow it to air dry.
- Aerosol Disinfectant Sprays - spray onto surface and leave on for 10 minutes, allow it to air dry.
- Fabric Disinfectant Sprays - spray onto fabric and let stand for 30 seconds. Air dry.
- Antibacterial Hand Wipes - generally works instantly, but allow your hands to air dry. Don’t use a paper towel or cloth to dry them yourself.
- Disinfectant Wipes - use enough wipes for the treated surface to remain wet for 4 minutes. Viruses will be killed in 15 seconds. Allow to air dry.
- Concentrated Disinfectant Solutions - dilute solution according to label instructions, usually 1 oz solution to 5 oz water. Wipe or spray onto surface and allow it to sit for 6 minutes. Allow it to air dry.
- Heavy Duty Kitchen Cleaners - spray onto surface and leave it on for two minutes and then allow it to air dry.
- Bathroom Cleaners - spray onto surface and leave for 10 minutes. Scrub/wipe and then rinse off.
