The Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi (DCT Abu Dhabi) has concluded the seventh edition of the 2025 Capacity Building Workshop, a pivotal initiative organised in continued cooperation with UNESCO under the title, 'Workshop on Periodic Reporting'.
Held between May 26 – 30 in Al Ain, the workshop convened researchers from the Culture Sector, practitioners, experts, and those involved in the safeguarding of Intangible Cultural Heritage across DCT Abu Dhabi's various departments. The workshop aimed at further strengthening national capacities in preparing both types of Periodic Reports: the Periodic Report on the implementation of the 2003 Convention and elements inscribed on the representative List, and the Periodic Report on elements inscribed on the List of Intangible Cultural heritage in Need of Urgent Safeguarding.
The workshop also enhanced researchers' abilities to complete Periodic Reports Forms, while deepening their understanding of the importance of engaging communities, groups, individuals, and stakeholders in safeguarding Intangible Cultural Heritage to achieve sustainable development. Participants also had the opportunity to translate knowledge accumulated from previous training courses into practical applications, sharing their insights and experiences with the group.
Furthermore, the Global Capacity Building Programme developed a plan for DCT Abu Dhabi, spanning from 2011 to 2025. This plan included training trainers, preparing inventory lists, developing safeguarding plans, and implementing the 2003 Convention. A total of 300 trainees, who are bearers of Intangible Cultural Heritage, were targeted. Based on their acquired experience, they became valuable community resources for obtaining information related to the preparation of periodic reports, inventory lists, and elements nominated for inscription on the UNESCO Lists. In this context, the seventh workshop of 2025, entitled "Periodic Reports", contributed to raising awareness about the importance of such reports in safeguarding Intangible Cultural Heritage and promoting sustainability in accordance with the standards of the 2003 UNESCO Convention.
The 2025 Capacity Building Workshop exemplifies the ongoing collaboration between DCT Abu Dhabi and UNESCO to uphold international best practices in heritage preservation. Through these efforts, DCT Abu Dhabi continues to strengthen national capacities to preserve, promote, and protect Intangible Cultural Heritage, contributing to the global recognition and appreciation of the UAE's cultural identity.
Since joining the 2003 Convention in 2005, the UAE has remained dedicated to safeguarding its Intangible Cultural Heritage. In line with this commitment, DCT Abu Dhabi has continuously worked with UNESCO to enhance skills development and capacity building. The Global Capacity Building Programme, launched by UNESCO in 2009, plays a key role in supporting countries in preserving their heritage and leveraging its potential for sustainable development
