Passengers To Get Boarding Passes On Mobiles
Passengers boarding from Abu Dhabi International Airport will soon be able to get their boarding passes through their mobile phones with the airport adopting bar coded boarding passes (BCBP) system.
Abu Dhabi Airports Company (ADAC) has achieved Platinum Airport status from the International Air Transport Association (IATA) for fully adopting the BCBP system.
Apart from cost reduction to airlines and airports, the BCBP will enable passengers to complete the check-in process by themselves online or at the kiosks at the airport and in future even through mobile phones. “We have not fixed a definite date, but the facility will be available soon,” a spokesperson for ADAC told Khaleej Times in reply to a question as to when will the passengers be able to check-in through mobile phones.
Abu Dhabi is the first major airport in the Middle East to receive the Platinum Airport status, which is given in recognition of the fact that all airlines operating at the airport have commenced issuing 2D (two dimensional) BCBP.
Even though some other airports in the region have already received the Platinum status, they are smaller airports, compared to ADAC, the spokesperson clarified. The aviation industry has set a target of converting to 100 per cent BCBP by the end of 2010, which is expected to bring in an annual industry savings of up to $1.5 billion, according to a release from IATA said here on Sunday.
Abu Dhabi International Airport has adopted the system six months ahead of schedule, a release from ADAC said.
BCBP leads to an average saving of $3.50 per passenger home check-in while it will go up to $5.34 per home check-in if the passengers are travelling without baggage. It offers more choice and speed to the customers who can skip long lines at the check-in desk
Boarding passes can be printed at home (web check-in) or at the self-service kiosks being introduced at the airport. When fully implemented BCBP will ensure that one boarding document is sufficient for the entire journey.
For the airlines implementation of BCBP leads to reduction of paper costs by 100 per cent and 40 per cent cut in equipment replacement costs. The magnetic stripe encoding equipment can cost up to $5,000 per unit. The airlines can also reduce the facilities required at the airport counters, the IATA release said.
