The Abu Dhabi Authority for Culture and Heritage (ADACH) has announced its preparations for the launch of the fourth session of the "Prince of Poets" competition. The competition will be held annually and will alternate between the "Prince of Poets" competition one year, and the "Million’s Poet" competition the following year.
The fourth session of the "Million’s Poet" competition is due to conclude its 2009 - 2010 season this Wednesday (7April) in Al Raha Beach Theater in Abu Dhabi. Five finalists from Saudi Arabia and Kuwait will compete for the "Poetry Standard" title amid much anticipation from both the audience and the media. Attention from the press has reached unprecedented levels. This is a reflection of the importance that is now being given to poetry, to the values it propagates, and to the position that has been achieved by the UAE capital as a world-class cultural hub, according to a press release by ADACH.
The annual rotation between the two contests will ensure that the focus is solely on one contest each year.
It is anticipated that the "Prince of Poets" contest will attract thousands of applicants who wish to participate in the famous classical Arabic poetry contest.
These two UAE poetry competitions have taken audiences in the Arab World by storm.
Eissa Al Mazrouei, Director special projects at ADACH, announced that the preliminary heats for the fourth season of the "Prince of Poets" 2010-2011 contest will begin after the holy month of Ramadan, instead of during the usual summer period. The fifth session of the "Million’s Poet" will be held during 2011-2012.
The "Prince of Poets" contest concluded September 2009 with a spectacular show for its final episode. The audience witnessed Syria’s Hassan Baiti winning the much sought after prestigious title, as well as one million UAE dirhams.
During its third session, the "Prince of Poets" won one the most important awards in the field of television in the Arab World at the AIB Festival of Britain. It also won the Gold Award for best TV program at the Gulf Festival, which took place recently in the Kingdom of Bahrain.
Sultan Al Amimi, Director of Poetry Academy, commented "after the great success of booth competitions and the wide international media coverage, it was decided to hold the competitions in rotation as we succeed to meet our goals in bringing public interest in all forms of Arab poetry and present new talented poets" According to Al Amimi, winners of booth competition now will keep the title for two years now which will help spot more light on their experience in addition to other poets participating in the competition; winners and poets will take part in deferent cultural events through out the year and their poetry books will be printed and distributed in a better way.
Meanwhile, Mohammed Khalaf Al Mazrouei, Director General of ADACH, said the "Million’s Poet" and "Prince of Poets" contests have succeeded in reviving the positive role played by Arabic poetry within Arab culture, highlighting messages of love and peace.
Mazrouei placed emphasis on the unprecedented global attention that is being given to the program’s mission and goals, commenting that it has added to the growing cultural prestige being enjoyed by the UAE.
He also highlighted the success of the two competitions for their discovery of previously unknown poetry talents.
The "Million’s Poet" competition boasts the largest prizes for Nabati poetry in the world. The aim of the competition is to celebrate and support Nabati poets.
The total amount of prize money presented to the top five winners is fifteen million UAE dirhams, with the winner of the title receiving five million UAE dirhams.
The "Millions’ Poet" project was launched in 2006 and has witnessed four consecutive years of success.
A record number of TV viewers watched the recent episodes of "Million’s Poet", with some western media outlets estimating viewing figures of around seventy million.
Internet search engines consistently indicate the popularity of the program, with well over twenty-five million related articles being reported in a variety of languages.
