Zayed University students break Guinness World Record in waste collection
(26 April 2010)

Zayed University students and "ZEIN: Zayed Environmental Impact Network" recently succeeded in collecting 394 kilograms of plastic waste in an attempt to break a previous Guinness World Record of 298 kg for the most plastic bottles collected for recycle in 8 hours.

The attempt was witnessed by Dr. Sulaiman Al Jassim Vice President of Zayed University, Dr. Jeffrey Belnap Associate Provost, Dr. Jameela Al Khanji Executive Director of Community service at the Family Development Foundation, Noura Al Kaabi Director of Tawasol in "twofour54", and Dr. Abdul Munim AlBella Advisor at the Emirates Environmental Group, in addition to representatives from the Emirates Identity Authority and the World Wide Fund of Nature- WWF.

Commenting on the success of the attempt, Dr. Sulaiman Al Jassim Vice President of Zayed University commended the students efforts in launching the campaign to collect the largest number of plastic bottles in an attempt to set a new Guinness World Record.

He explained that such initiatives translate Zayed University’s students sense of responsibility toward the environment as the students managed to achieve two goals at the same time, the first was to spread awareness about the importance of recycling by encouraging all students, staff and faculty to participate in collecting the plastic bottles and the second was to achieve a new record in Guinness World Records.

Dr. Jassim added that the campaign is part of many events and activities that "ZEIN: Zayed Environmental Impact Network" has participated in or initiated that aims at reducing energy and water consumption within the university’s community and to spread awareness on the importance of adopting recycling practices that reduce carbon emissions from the university.

On his part, Dr. Osama Al-Alami Associate Professor in the College of Arts and Sciences Department of Natural Sciences and Public Health and President of "ZEIN" said: "This initiative is the result of joint work between Zayed University Student Council and "ZEIN" in an effort from both parties to shed light on the amount of plastic waste that can be collected for recycling. The students succeeded in collecting 394 kg of plastic bottles for recycling in 8 hours which encourages us to reflect on the amount of bottles we can collect for recycling during a longer period of time.

Student Council President, Mariam Omran Al Hallami said: "The attempt to break a world record for recycling is an initiative to get all students encouraged in an entertaining way to begin to recycle plastic." "For the past two weeks that we have been collecting with the help of Sheikh Zayed Private Academy, The Centre of Waste Management - Abu Dhabi, and Masafi Mineral Water Company, I was shocked by the amount of plastic we consume in households on a daily basis. The reason that we decided to plan and organise a record-breaking attempt is because we really believe that Zayed University students are capable of absolutely everything, and the biggest proof of that is that we managed to take the campaign to the next level and enter Zayed University’s names which proudly bears the name of the founding father of the nation the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan , in Guinness World Records which is one of the most internationally recognised titles of achievement", she added.

Al Hallami added: "After the success of our attempt we are sending the collected bottles for recycling and are currently waiting the announcement of our accomplishment in breaking the previous record from the Guinness World Records committee".
