Third International Child Mental And Behavioural Health Conference Closes On A High
(3 June 2024)

The third International Child Mental and Behavioural Health Conference closed on a high, with more than 600 child behavioural health professionals converging on the capital to receive the latest updates on treatment and management of patients and their families.

Held under the patronage of His Excellency Sheikh Nahyan Bin Mubarak Al Nahyan, the conference, themed “Healthy Child, Healthy Family, Healthy Society” was organised by Abu Dhabi’s flagship healthcare facility, Sheikh Khalifa Medical City (SKMC), in conjunction with the Gulf Child Mental & Behavioural Health Society and Emirates Psychiatric Society.

Chairman Dr. Ahmad Almai, Consultant and Head of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry division at SKMC, was confident that this was the biggest conference to date, highlighting the many experts and specialists both speaking and in attendance.

“As we continue to develop steady, increased awareness of behavioural health, the demand for services in the UAE and the Gulf region grows alongside it. The key to ongoing success in treatment in this area is continued professional collaboration, sharing not only best practice but the latest updates in treatment and management,” Dr Almai  Diplomat of the American Board of Psych & Neurology, said.

“Without doubt this has been the most successful event yet, and I am delighted to have welcomed not only international and local health professionals, but celebrities, UN Good Will Ambassadors and key authors,” he added.

The two day-event, running 23-24 January at The Emirates Centre for Strategic Studies and Research, Abu Dhabi, welcomed experts such as Conference Co-Chair Dr. Adel Karrani from Rashid Hospital, keynote speaker Dr. Hesham Hamoda from Harvard, Boston Children’s Hospital, and SKMC keynote speaker, Dr. Tarek Darwish, Medical Director of Behavioural Science Pavillion (BSP).

The conference covered a range of topics related to child welfare including physical and sexual violence and raising penalties in order to reduce these crimes. Additional subjects covered mental health issues which affect children such as anxiety, eating disorders, autism, depression, ADHD and intellectual disabilities.

SKMC, managed by Cleveland Clinic, is part of the SEHA HealthSystem and owned and operated by Abu Dhabi Health Services Company PJSC (SEHA), which is responsible for the curative activities of all the public hospitals and clinics in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi.
