(20 October 2010)

"Based on traditions of a harmonious respect for nature, Abu Dhabi has undertaken bold steps to conserve water and energy, support the development of renewable energy, breed and reintroduce endangered wildlife programmes and support species conservation projects around the world," said Razan Khalifa Al Mubarak, Assistant Secretary General, Environment Agency - Abu Dhabi (EAD).

She was addressing at the 2010 Wildscreen Festival held recently in Bristol, UK and attended by around 800 people - including festival delegates, VIPs and members of the public.

EAD is the principal sponsor of Wildscreen International, a conservation charity that has collected one of the world’s largest international wildlife photographic databases. Through this partnership, EAD has organised a landmark photography exhibition entitled "Abu Dhabi Wildlife Photography Exhibition," which toured various venues throughout Abu Dhabi, Al Gharbia and Al Ain. The exhibition aims to increase the public’s awareness on the UAE?s unique biodiversity.

Jim Leape, Director General of WWF International, and Julia Marton Lefevre, Director General of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), also spoke during the keynote event.

Al Mubarak said that "We believe that the world’s film makers have some of the most powerful communication tools in their hands, and with your films, together we can reach people worldwide through cinema, TV and of course the Internet." "Wildlife film-making is a genre that has expanded enormously, providing enthralled viewers across the world with images and footage of our planet which have provided a window into the excitement of nature. The knowledge and enthusiasm of the presenters, supported by highly-skilled technical producers, cameramen and engineers, have helped to bring nature onto the big screen and into homes", she said and added: "I feel this Festival is a celebration of art and nature and of the ways in which nature can be brought close to so many people who would otherwise not have access".
