Khalifa University, EADS Defence & Security And Emiraje Systems To Advance Cyber Operations In The GCC

MOU includes formation of a Centre of Excellence for Cyber security, Student summer internships within EADS Europe, postgraduate studies sponsorship and international lecture programmes

Khalifa University of Science, Technology & Research (KUSTAR); EADS Defence & Security and; Emiraje Systems L.L.C., a partnership between C4 Advanced Solutions (C4AS) and EADS Defence & Security, signed a Memorandum of Understanding for a collaborative programme in Cyber Operations. This initiative is set to increase the local capability in specified technology areas associated with Cyber operations at KUSTAR in particular, the rest of the UAE and the GCC in general.

The programme includes various activities. Primarily, an EADS Defence & Security-KUSTAR Centre of Excellence will be created with a world-wide focus on competence in the field of Cyber Operations, with particular emphasis on the protection of Critical National Infrastructure and Critical Information Infrastructure.

From an educational standpoint, summer internships will be provided for KUSTAR students at EADS Defence & Security’s facilities throughout Europe, and the company will also sponsor pertinent postgraduate programmes at other leading Universities in the same field. EADS will also sponsor an international lecture programme on Innovation in Cyber Operations for Critical National Infrastructure. Emiraje Systems L.L.C. will facilitate the development of the Cyber Operations Centre of Excellence.

The MoU was signed by Dr. Arif Sultan Al Hammadi, KUSTAR’s Interim President, Mr. Mark Alexander, Chief Executive Officer, Emiraje Systems and Mr. Franz Peraus, Chief Executive Officer Middle East of EADS.

KUSTAR’s Interim President, Dr. Arif Sultan Al Hammadi said: “The MOU is aimed at further strengthening the capabilities of our students and providing them with professional opportunities within the Cyber field. The agreement with Emiraje Systems and EADS Defence & Security is an integral part of our objective to partner with industry leaders that foster innovative research within the UAE and beyond.”

KUSTAR was established in February 2007 by a decree issued by the UAE President His Highness Sheikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Al Nahyan to complement Abu Dhabi’s 2030 vision, which aims at building a knowledge-based economy that effectively contributes to the development of the UAE.

KUSTAR’s main campus is located in Abu Dhabi, while it operates with another campus in Sharjah, and presently offers bachelor degrees in Computer, Communication, Electronic, Software, Mechanical, Aerospace and BioMedical Engineering, Master’s and Doctorate degree programs in Computer, Telecommunication and Electronic Engineering, in addition to the Master’s degree in Information Security. In the future, KUSTAR will also offer degrees in other disciplines of Engineering, Logistics and Management, Life Sciences and Homeland Security.

Moreover, KUSTAR will include research centers in disciplines such as Information and Communications Technology (ICT), Energy, Nanotechnology, Aerospace and Health Sciences.

KUSTAR is open to men and women from all nationalities with particular emphasis being placed on educating young UAE nationals.

EADS Defence & Security (EAD DS) is a systems solutions provider for armed forces and civil security worldwide. Its portfolio ranges from sensors and secure networks through missiles to aircraft as well as global security, service and support solutions. In 2009, EADS DS– with around 21,000 employees– achieved revenues of €5.4 billion.

Emiraje is a joint venture (JV) established between C4 Advanced Solutions LLC (C4AS) and EADS Defence & Security Systems for the purpose of bringing the most advance C4ISR solutions to UAE and wider MENA markets. It exists for the purpose of prosecuting joint projects identified by the JV Board of Directors as suitable target activities within its defined geographic boundary.
