EAD Awards 88 Winners In Annual Environment Competition
(19 May 2010)

88 students from 20 Abu Dhabi Government and Private Schools were honored last week by the Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi (EAD) as winners of the Annual Environmental Competition 2009-2010.

The Competition, in its ninth year, was sponsored by Shell Abu Dhabi and organized in coordination with the educational zones of Abu Dhabi Emirate and the Abu Dhabi Education Council. Inspired by the World Environment Day theme of “Uniting to Combat climate Change,” EAD adopted the same theme for this year’s competition.

”Over the years, we have received positive feedback about this competition from teachers, students and their parents. They have found it to be very informative. We chose to focus on climate change because our Annual Environmental Awareness and Behaviour Survey 2009 revealed that there was a disconnect between awareness and behavior,” said Fozeya Al Mahmoud, Manager, Environmental Education Dept, EAD.

She added that by organizing this competition every year, EAD has helped to increase the level of environmental awareness amongst Abu Dhabi’s students by motivating them, engaging their competitive spirit and enhancing their creative and scientific skills.

Around 858 students from 186 Private and Government schools in Abu Dhabi participated in this year’s competition. 184 students submitted drawings and paintings, 299 students participated in a Recycling Relay Race, 226 students performed a skit category while 149 students participated in a Public Speaking exercise.

For the first time since its inception, the competition was conducted live and simultaneously for all the students enabling them to experience the feeling of coming together for a joint cause thereby seeing the bigger picture. The students were judged by a panel of officials selected from different government and private organizations in Abu Dhabi.
