UAEREP engages new stakeholders in Russia

A UAE Research Programme for Rain Enhancement Science, UAEREP, delegation is set to visit Russia to meet with a Programme awardee and local research institutions. Reflecting the Programme’s international status as a leading global scientific initiative, the UAE team will share their advances in rain enhancement science and technology with some of the world’s leading institutions working in the fields of rain enhancement, meteorology, and hydrology. The roadshow’s visit reflects the importance of the innovative work undertaken by Russian scientists in weather and water-related research and the potential for future collaborative work.

Launched by the UAE Ministry of Presidential Affairs, and managed by the National Centre of Meteorology, NCM, UAEREP’s active international engagement has already ensured it attaining a leading position in the global quest to address water security challenges through innovative scientific and technical research.

Dr. Abdulla Al Mandous, NCM Director, said, "By inspiring new ideas and creative research, helped strengthen the UAE’s position as an international hub for the next generation innovation needed to ensure our common water security. Our roadshow visit to Russia is a further step in our mission to intensify our collaboration with those leaders and institutions across the globe that share our vision of a world free from water stress."

On 20th July, the Programme roadshow will meet with its 3rd cycle awardee Dr. Ali Abshaev and his team at the Lebedev Physical Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences in Moscow. This visit will include a demonstration of "TESIS", a set of solar imaging instruments developed by the Lebedev Physical Institute and deployed in space by the Russian spacecraft CORONAS-PHOTON in 2009. Through TESIS, scientists can access complex observations of solar active phenomena from the transition region to the inner and outer solar corona with high spatial, spectral and temporal resolutions.

Following its visit to the Lebedev Physical Institute, the UAE team will travel to Obninsk on 23rd July for a meeting with the Federal State Institution Research and Production Association "TYPHOON". The roadshow will culminate on 25th July with meetings in St Petersburg with the Russian State Hydrometeorological University and the Main Geophysical Observatory to discuss the latest scientific and technological innovations related to weather and water sciences.

Alya Al Mazroui, Director of UAEREP, said, "The extensive interest that our Programme has generated within the global sciences community proves that we are already having a real impact on global scientific collaboration in this field. We are building on that interest through meeting and engaging with our stakeholders in Russia."

"Our roadshow visit to Russia will also allow us to meet with Dr Ali Abshaev and his research team members to discuss his research executive plan, monitor the progress he has made to date on his awarded research project, and examine the project’s labs and facilities", Al Mazroui added.

Since its inception, the Programme has built a global network with more than 1200 researchers from over 500 prestigious global institutions including the European Organisation for Nuclear Research, CERN, the European Space Agency, ESA, and NASA. The Programme has also built enduring links with institutions in countries ranging from the United States to the UK, Germany and Russia in Europe, and to Thailand, China and Japan in East and South East Asia.
