Special Features

The cosmopolitan city of Abu Dhabi is home to a plethora of local and international cuisines. There's so much food to try it can seem overwhelming. That's why we've pulled together a list of five foods you absolutely have to try while you're here; an Abu Dhabi food bucket list, if you will.

Shawarma

Typically made with lamb, beef or chicken, Shawarma is a roti wrap filled with meat, garlic sauce, pickles, fries and tomatoes. The traditional Emirati dish is one of the most popular snacks in the UAE. You'll never find yourself short of places to grab yourself a Shawarma, but if you're feeling overwhelmed by choice, it's worth checking out Shish Shawerma's sandwich menu (And maybe grab yourself some fried halloumi while you're at it).

Cauliflower Rice

Named superfood of the year by Deliveroo, cauliflower has made its way onto our plates as a healthy carb alternative. Many restaurants in the UAE have started replacing traditional rice with cauliflower rice. The faux-carb is created by finely chopping or blitzing the raw cauliflower in a blender, then cooking as you would normal rice (but for significantly less time). So the next time you're about to order a rice dish in Abu Dhabi, try cauliflower rice instead for a healthier and arguably tastier alternative.

Crusted Rack of Lamb

Lebanese is perhaps the most prominent cuisine in Abu Dhabi (aside from Emirati, of course). There are tons of Lebanese dishes that you have to try, but the one that truly stands out is the crusted rack of lamb. The rack of lamb is coated with a breadcrumb and garlic crust and pan-fried to perfection. Now, because there are so many Lebanese restaurants in Abu Dhabi, we're going to help you out. Our favourite crusted rack of lamb comes from Li Beirut. Served with sweet potatoes boulangère, tomato jam, and shaved fresh black truffle, the Zaatar lamb is one of the restaurant's speciality dishes.

Camel Pizza

Eating Camel really isn't anything too special in the UAE; in most Emirati restaurants, you're bound to find at least a camel burger. But there's one camel dish that isn't quite as common but should definitely be on your Abu Dhabi food bucket list: the camel pizza. It's pretty much the same as a 'normal' pizza. You'll get a crispy base topped with tomato sauce and mozzarella, only the topping is minced camel meat. Camel meat tastes a little like sausage, but with a richer, gamier taste to it.

Stuffed Camel

Stuffed camel is one of the most amazing dishes in all of the UAE for its taste and its size. The dish has actually won a Guinness World Record for being the biggest dish in the world and can serve between 80 and 100 people. But what is the camel stuffed with? It's not stuffed with vegetables, as you might expect. It's instead stuffed with eggs and other meats and fish.

Unfortunately, stuffed camel doesn't really belong on this list because we're pretty sure you won't be able to get your hands on any. It's often dished up at wedding celebrations, so you won't be able to sit down at a restaurant and have a taste. Still cool though, right?

So there you have it: five foods you have to try in Abu Dhabi. We hope your visit is filled with culinary delights!
