The 2017 edition of the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship will take place 19th - 22nd January at Abu Dhabi Golf Club. Teeing off in 2006 and quickly becoming established as a favorite event for players and spectators alike, the Abu Dhabi HSBC Golf Championship is recognised as one of the biggest events on the European Tour, regularly attracting some of golf’s most famous names. Since its inception by TCA Abu Dhabi, it has been staged at the sublime Abu Dhabi Golf Club as part of the Tour’s Gulf Swing.
The Championship’s ongoing success is laying the foundations for Abu Dhabi’s emergence as an international golfing destination. Playing to a cumulative global television audience of 400 million, the Championship is inextricably linked with the building of Abu Dhabi’s tourism profile as an international destination of distinction, and is integral in putting the emirate firmly on the international sporting map.
In 2011, as part of a five-year partnership with HSBC the event’s prize fund raised to US $2.7 million – an increase of US $500,000 – making it the richest purse of the Gulf Swing. The partnership ushered in a new era for the Championship and golf in Abu Dhabi, and TCA Abu Dhabi, together with HSBC, are committed to hosting the event’s most impressive playing field.
Over the years, the Championship has consistently attracted a world-class field of the game’s top international stars, and boasts a player field unmatched in the region and among the best on the European Tour! However, despite the credentials of our star-studded field, year-on-year the leader board has been unpredictable. The 2012 and 2013 winners proved to be giant slayers, when unheralded Britons, England’s Robert Rock and Welshman Jamie Donaldson, sent shock waves around the galleries and headline writers into frenzy after 72 holes of edge-of-your-seat spectacle.
In 2014, Spain’s Pablo Larrazabal held off a fierce challenge from Rory McIlroy and Phil Mickelson by making a birdie on the 72nd hole, to win by 1 shot, and he will be looking to follow Paul Casey and Kaymer as multiple winners of the famous Falcon Trophy.
The Championship’s 2015 tagline ‘Expect the Unexpected’ again rang true as tens of thousands of fans witnessed the most dramatic finish in the Championship’s 10-year history – Frenchman Gary Stal, ranked 357 in the world before the Championship, overturned an eight-shot deficit against final day favourite, Martin Kaymer, to take an unexpected but well-deserved victory. Stal, who started the day tied in fifth place, shot a seven under par 65 to finish 19-under for the Championship and seal his maiden European Tour victory.
